Soy milk recall over iodine-related thyroid problems

Soy milk recall over iodine-related thyroid problems
May 7, 2010

Bonsoy is a soy milk product which was recently reformulated. It was recalled after it had been linked to a selection of thyroid problems. It appears that the recall reached a variety of countries, although perhaps Australia was hit the most, and it is also the location of the company that produces the product.

The recall appeared to be over excessively elevated levels of iodine in the soy milk. The estimated amount was roughly 7500 micrograms per cup of the product. It seems that the particularly high amount of iodine came from kombu seaweed extract which was in the previous version of the soy milk.
